The Issues

The next City Council will shape and mold the future of the City.
The current economic slow-down offers a wonderful opportunity to plan for our future.  Serious decisions in financing and planning will face the next Council.  Every member of Council should be prepared to work hard to ensure our future success.

City housing – residential, mixed use and Senior - needs our attention.
We need to continue to support our homeowners in the renewal of our neighborhoods and find ways to deal with the impact of “McMansions” on our communities.

Achieve responsible commercial redevelopment that is appropriate.
A controlled commercial revival, especially along Fairfax Boulevard, will benefit the entire City.  Businesses pay over half the taxes collected each year by the City.  We have a Master Plan that identifies principles to be used in the future.  We must ensure that business revitalization will not result in a Ballston or Tyson’s Corner

‘Small-Town’ Charm
Many candidates for City Council talk about maintaining our ‘small-town’ charm - it sounds great, but what exactly does that mean?  The City of Fairfax has a unique identity in many ways. Those of us who live here understand why it is important that we preserve and fight for our unique environment.

--- Our location provides access to all the benefits of a larger metropolitan City - medical care, public transportation, airports, higher education, the arts, etc.

--- Our children have access to sports and recreation just moments away.  Schools and fields are all within a short distance.  Our school buildings are newly renovated and are run by one of the most successful school systems in the country.

--- Our taxes are among the lowest in the region and yet we maintain one of the highest levels of services.

--- Our City leaders are neighbors we can access and talk to about issues that affect us all.

--- Our seasonal events, The Fourth of July Parade, Trick or Treating in Kitty Poser Park, The Chocolate Lover’s Festival – identify who we are and bring us together.

As we seek to improve our City we need to recognize our pride in our hometown.  This pride will help attract new neighbors and quality businesses that will help us in the future. We have something unique – let’s work hard to keep it that way.
